These photographs are taken with a stereo camera which takes two pictures at once through two linked lens/shutter combinations. The lenses are about the same distance apart as our eyes, so each picture represents (approximately) what each eye sees.
The resulting pair of images contain information in three dimensions and when viewed correctly, convey a sense of depth. Most people find the "cross eyed" viewing method easier as we often cross our eyes to view normally. While viewing with your eyes crossed, the image on the left is seen through the right eye and the image on the right is seen through the left eye. When you have succeeded with this, you will find yourself distracted by the fact that you see 3 images! Each eye still sees both the left and right images, yet only needs to see it's respective image. You can mask this by holding your hands palm-forward towards your face to provide a window for each eye to see the correct image only. |
